Umios, one of Japan’s largest seafood company, has acquired a 51% stake in Malaysia’s Pet World International for Yen 11.4 billion (US$70.3 million) as part of its ambition to expand in Southeast Asia. Umios will buy the stake from Wah Kong Corporation as it aims to build its presence in Southeast Asia, touted the fastest growing pet food market in Asia. Umios is also looking at the Philippines and Thailand which saw a CAGR of 10% in the pet food category.
Umios, previously known as Maruha Nichiro, is a producer of wet cat food, and is currently selling to East Asia, North America and Europe. The latest acquisition will signify its entry into Southeast Asia and expand its range to dry dog food.
The main reason for the acquisition of Pet World International is that the latter has a strong brand in Malaysia, currently holding No.2 position in the dog and cat pet food market. Pet World saw 11.3% growth in net sales to Yen 12.4 billion (US$76.5 million) in 2025.
With the acquisition, Pet World will also be able to take advantage of the procurement capabilities of Umios’s Marine Resources Business division to buy ingredients.
Umios highlighted its plan to continue expanding into the pet food segment via M&A over the next 2 years.
