Traditional eating habits are changing. Consumers no longer think about their meals only in terms of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Instead, eating has become more fluid, with food consumed throughout the day to fit specific occasions, lifestyles and wellness goals.
Innova Market Insights identifies this shift as one of its Top 10 Food & Beverage Trends for 2026, calling it ‘Made For Moments’. This trend reflects how consumers are reshaping not just what they eat but when, where and why they eat it.
Brands to shift focus to occasion-based innovation
‘Made For Moments’ signifies a broader evolution in how food and beverage brands approach innovation. Consumers are becoming increasingly intentional about what they eat, expecting every eating occasion to serve a purpose. Whether it’s boosting energy, increasing protein intake, supporting wellbeing or simply making a better-for-you choice, food is expected to deliver more than ever before. Further insight from Innova also reveals that consumers are looking for products that provide enjoyment, fit seamlessly into different occasions and lifestyles, and combine indulgence with functional nutrition.
This evolution extends beyond product formulation through several key innovations:
- Diverse Packaging Formats: Brands are offering flexible, single-serving, and resealable snack packs designed for on-the-go convenience, portion control, and trial-friendly repeat snacking.
- Solo Dining Solutions: With the rise of single-person households, the market is seeing a surge in fresh, frozen, and ready-to-eat products specifically portioned for one, reducing food waste and meal-prep time.
- Casual Socializing: The shift from formal, alcohol-driven gatherings to daytime, health-conscious, and flexible social meetups means more demand for ready-to-drink mocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, and shareable finger foods.
- Snackification of Meals: Younger consumers are frequently replacing traditional lunches and dinners with snack-oriented builds. Brands are filling this gap with high-protein, functional snacks that offer actual meal satisfaction.
For manufacturers, this trend signals that food innovation must move beyond categories to center around specific consumption occasions. Success will depend on developing products that balance convenience, nutrition, taste, functionality and affordability, while fitting naturally into the different moments consumers choose to eat.
Dairy Proteins Gaining Prominence
According to Kristi Saitama, Vice President, Global Ingredients Marketing at the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC), dairy ingredients are well-positioned to help manufacturers respond to these evolving expectations.
Kristi explained, “While dairy proteins have traditionally been associated with products for athletes and children, innovation has expanded well beyond these categories. Today, protein-fortified bakery products, sweet and savoury snacks, ice cream, yogurt, confectionery, fitness, and ready meals are among the key applications, demonstrating how manufacturers are incorporating dairy ingredients into familiar formats consumed throughout the day.”
This shift is reflected in Innova Market Insights’ analysis of global new product launches. In 2025, tracked new products containing key dairy ingredients such as whey proteins, milk proteins and permeate continued to experience strong growth across multiple food and beverage categories. Notably, the number of new products containing milk protein and permeate recorded new highs, increasing by 8.1% and 7.2% respectively from the year before. Those containing whey protein recorded a significant jump of 19.2% year-on-year and were second highest on record. (see Table 1.0)
Southeast Asia Emerges as a Growth Market
The growth in dairy ingredient launches reflects rising demand for products that combine quality protein, functionality and enjoyment within familiar food formats. The trend is particularly evident across Southeast Asia, where demand for functional, convenient foods continues to accelerate.
According to Innova Market Insights data, Southeast Asia accounted for 38% of tracked new product launches in Asia, while whey protein launches accounted for 28%. Notably, 57% of tracked new launches in Asia containing permeate were in Southeast Asia.
Across categories, whey protein was used most frequently in new baby and toddler products in Southeast Asia, milk proteins appeared most in new hot drinks launches, while bakery recorded the highest new launches incorporating permeate. (see Chart 2.0)
While these figures reflect the region’s growing appetite for dairy ingredient innovation, Southeast Asia still trails Northeast Asian markets for dairy protein launches. In fact, China, Japan and Korea, all ranked among the world’s top 10 markets for whey protein product launches in 2025. Japan also ranked high for milk proteins.
The opportunity is clear for manufacturers in Southeast Asia.

Creating Foods That Deliver More
U.S. dairy ingredients provide unique advantages for manufacturers seeking to combine nutritional value with formulation flexibility across a wide range of food and beverage applications. Whey and milk proteins deliver high‑quality nutrition and support protein fortification, while skim milk powder contributes dairy solids for body and nutrition. Permeate, containing primarily lactose and minerals, enhances browning, flavour and moisture retention. Together, these ingredients offer manufacturers versatile tools to improve texture, taste, and functionality, enabling product innovation that meets evolving consumer expectations
Beyond ingredient functionality, USDEC supports manufacturers through market intelligence, technical expertise and formulation support, helping brands identify whitespace opportunities and develop products that deliver quality nutrition in formats consumers already know and enjoy. While moments are important, food products containing proteins have to be mindful of individual needs i.e. whether they are catered for busy working adults, healthy ageing or for athletes.
Kristi continued, “With its growing population, rich culinary diversity and evolving consumer lifestyles, Southeast Asia offers manufacturers ample opportunities to develop products that address a wide range of eating occasions and nutritional priorities. From essential nutrition for children to protein-enriched snacks for busy professionals and fortified breakfast foods and beverages that help start the day healthfully, today’s consumers are seeking enjoyable food experiences that also deliver meaningful nutritional value. This is an exciting time for manufacturers and USDEC stands ready to support them on this journey.”

Capture the Opportunity in the New Eating Moments
Made For Moments underscores that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to introducing new products to Southeast Asia. As consumers continue to redefine how, when and why they eat, the opportunity lies in reimagining familiar products to deliver more personalised, functional and nutritious solutions for different eating occasions. Manufacturers that innovate around these everyday moments will be best positioned to meet the next generation of consumer demand.
