Norwegian seafood exports to China saw a staggering 88% year-on-year growth in July 2025 to reach NOK 613 million (US$61.7 million), making the country its 2nd largest export market for seafood products, according to the Norwegian Seafood Council.
China is no longer just the key market for Norwegian salmon but it has also become a growth engine for Norway’s global overall seafood exports.
Efforts are still ongoing to boost exports to China with more than 8 Norwegian companies participated at the 19th Shanghai International Fisheries and Seafood Exhibition recently.
Norway’s primary export item is salmon which saw 122% jump to 52,069 tons from January to July 2025 to China compared to the same period in 2024.
China is now the world’s 6th largest market for Atlantic salmon, and the largest in Asia, twice bigger than Japan (2nd in Asia), and it also recorded the fastest growth among the top 10 markets.
According to the council, expansion of e-commerce, modern retail coupled with the continuous rise of the middle class help to accelerate demand for salmon.
China has also become an engine of growth for Norway’s global seafood exports.
