With a growing migrant population, Singapore is searching for alternative sources of meat to support growing demand. It is now importing meat from non-traditional sources in China and Vietnam for chilled pork and processed chicken respectively, signifying the need to diversify to ensure the country has adequate supply of staple products like meat.
China-based Hunan Huale Foodstuff Co., Ltd, a pork producer in Hanshou, Changde is commencing the first shipment of chilled pork to Singapore, as part of a food trade agreement signed on 15 December. Under this agreement, Chongqing and the provinces of Heilongjiang will supply processed cooked pork while Hunan will export chilled, frozen and processed pork products to Singapore. These shipments will represent Singapore’s first imports of chilled pork from China.
Singapore does not raise pigs domestically but it consumes about 70,000 tonnes of chilled pork each year. China aims to capture half of the lucrative Singapore market within 2 years.
Meanwhile, C.P. Vietnam Corporation has also announced the export of its first batch of processed chicken to Singapore. This represents a major milestone as the Vietnam-based firm is now able to meet the strict production standards of premium markets like Singapore. Its CPV Food Binh Phuoc plant operates a closed-loop system and holds international certifications including HACCP, BRC, ISO 22000, and halal. Before reaching Singapore, the company’s processed chicken was already exported to Japan, Hong Kong (China), Cambodia, and Laos, with Japan alone importing 10,000 tons by November 2025.
C.P. Vietnam plans to expand exports of its processed chickens to the UK and EU, supporting Vietnam’s long-term goal of bringing its high quality agricultural products to the global market.
