Davao City-based Malagos Chocolate has just started shipping its award-winning dried fermented cacao to Canada, hoping to gain a foothold in the North American market.
Rex Puentespina, Sales and Marketing Director of Malagos Agri Venture Corporation said that the chocolate company has initially shipped dried and fermented cacao beans to Canada, to introduce the locally grown beans to the markets in North America. In addition, it has also set up a branch in Canada to strengthen the presence of Malagos Chocolate in the country.
Rex acknowledged that the North American region could offer a promising future for the local cacao industry as it has a huge demand for fine-flavor chocolates.
Earlier on, the company had shipped to the US but this was halted due to insufficient volume, as outputs were mainly focused on domestic Philippines market. Malagos hopes to convince more Filipino farmers to grow cacao plants to ramp up production so as to meet future export demand. Presently, it has partnered with around 100 farmers in the city.
Malagos Chocolate has won several awards and recognised for its fine-flavor chocolates. It won bronze for its 100% pure unsweetened chocolate in 2019 Academy of Chocolate Awards, and also Great Taste 1-Star in 2019 Academy of Chocolate Awards Commendation for its 65?rk chocolate.
