China’s No.1 dairy giant, Mengniu Dairy is eyeing on expansion in the African continent for its long-term growth.
According to Wei Wei, Vice President of Mengniu Dairy, “We see Africa as a very important market right now. For now we don’t have a very specific timeline, but we really value this market…we see a lot of opportunities there and we will develop more business there in the future.”
Mengniu is China’s top dairy producer with products ranging from liquid milk to ice cream, milk powder, and yogurt. It has successfully exported its products to 14 countries and regions.
Mengniu has also established its first overseas liquid milk production base in Indonesia, signaling its intent to expand its international footprint. Mengniu’s new interest in Africa aligns with a growing trend of global dairy players looking to the continent for higher growth margins.
The African dairy market has already attracted significant investments from major dairy players like Dodla Dairy (India) and Danone (France) amongst others. Africa is an attractive market as it has a huge population, and many countries like Kenya and Nigeria are still facing significant milk deficits.
