Malaysia’s halal certification body, JAKIM is looking to assist the Philippines into building a world-class Halal certifying body (HCB) in the Philippines.
Philippines’ Trade Secretary Cristina Roque confirmed the discussion on the potential collaboration. JAKIM, a leading regional authority in Halal certification, is expected to assist in providing certification, training, and market access to Filipino enterprises. This would enhance the Philippines’ competitiveness, as well as to strengthen trade ties with neighbouring Malaysia.
JAKIM is also taking advantage of the 3-years’ of strong support provided by the current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to the halal industry. His presidential term is expected to end in 2028.
There are currently 12 accredited Halal Certification Bodies (HCBs) in the Philippines
Roque is pushing JAKIM to not only certify products but also provide assistance in marketing the local halal products. JAKIM, for its part, said it is ready to open new market opportunities for Filipino products in the global Halal industry.
Last year, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) launched the Philippine Halal Industry Development Strategic Plan, which runs up to 2028. The plan seeks to transform the Philippines into a premier Halal hub in the Asia Pacific region, with potential Pesos 230 billion (US$4.13 billion) in trade and investments and 120,000 new jobs by the end of Marcos’ term.
