Amidst the robust growth in pet ownership globally, US-based Scoular has recently entered into an exclusive agreement with Borneo-based SEADLING to offer pet food manufacturers in the US a unique pet food ingredient which can improve pet health.
SEADLING is a company based in Borneo, East Malaysia that produces the powder derived from seaweed using proprietary technology. Seaweed is an emerging pet food ingredient because of its health benefits. Nearly 70% of pet food purchasers are interested in treats or toppers that promise functional health benefits, according to Mintel’s US Pet Food Marketing Report.
SEADLING’s Head of Product, Dr. Birdie Scott Padam mentioned that seaweed powder offers many benefits including aiding skin, coat, gut, and dental health and supporting brain function, bone development, and cardiovascular health. It also offers essential minerals and vitamins, including vitamin K2 and potassium, which pet diets often lack. Seaweed also provides binding capabilities and manufacturing compatibility, helping manufacturers to achieve consistent, clean-label products.
Evan Ibach, Senior Merchant for Scoular Pet said, “Pet parents are increasingly seeking pet food that boosts pet health and vitality. SEADLING and Scoular are excited to bring this on-trend ingredient to North American manufacturers.”
In addition to wanting health benefits for their pets, consumers seek ingredients that benefit the environment. In fact, 70% of consumers say sustainability is now more important when selecting products than it was 2 years ago, according to NIQ’s Green Divide Report.
In addition, SEADLING also prioritizes sustainability practices like seaweed cultivation via farming and not through wild harvesting, as asserted by Simon Davis, its Founder and CEO.
