Thailand, a major exporter of poultry and poultry products, reported that its exports rose less than expected in the 1st half of 2020 due to COVID-19.
Thai Broiler Processing Exporters Association (TBPEA) highlighted that the country exported 470,000 tonnes of chicken in the review period, representing a year-on-year rise of only 2%, with export value of Bt 54 billion (US$1.73 billion).
TBPEA spokesperson Kukrit Arepagorn commented that the pandemic caused Thailand’s 2 main markets, the EU and Japan to cut chicken imports. Chicken exports to the EU dropped by 10% as the COVID-19 situation in the region is not yet resolved. Kukrit said that Thailand expects to export 280,000 tonnes of chicken to the EU this year, down from 330,000 tonnes in 2019.
Meanwhile, chicken exports to Japan only rose by 2?cause the pandemic had hit tourism and forced the country to postpone the Tokyo Olympic Games, thereby reducing demand.
However, exports to China and Singapore grew, to make up for the shortfall, by 100,000 tonnes and 20,000 tonnes respectively during the review period.
