To ensure sufficient supply of cooking oil to consumers at reasonable prices, the Sabah state government has launched locally-produced cooking oil (palm oil) under the brand name ‘Sayang’ (love).
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the cooking oil, produced by state-owned Sawit Kinabalu Sdn Bhd through its subsidiary, Kunak Edible Oil Sdn Bhd (KEOSB), will be available for consumers in the state soon.
Noor, who is also the Chairman of Sawit Kinabalu Group said, “Sawit Kinabalu will seek a distributor and we hope that this new product will ensure a sufficient supply of cooking oil in Sabah.” This is part of the government’s CSR move to satisfy consumer need amid recent shortage in cooking oil and high prices.
The cooking oil will be in 1kg pack, and 2kg and 5kg bottles, and be priced substantially lower than other brands in the market. For example, the subsidised Sayang cooking oil will cost only RM2.50 (US$0.55) for a 1kg pack whereas a non-subsidised cooking oil cost RM13.20 (US$2.88) for a 2kg pack.
Sawit Kinabalu has a monthly production capacity of 150 tonnes for the subsidised cooking oil and 100 tonnes for non-subsidised brands of oil.
