Nestle Philippines is switching from plastic to paper straws for its RTD beverages, an important decision which will eliminate 130 metric tonnes of plastic straws in the country by the end of the year.
The move to paper straw will be completed by end-2020 as part of Nestle’s global commitment to make 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. Nestle’s other regional counterparts in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand have also initiated this switch earlier on.
Nestle’s RTD brands Chuckie, Bear Brand, Nescafe and MILO have already utilised the paper straws in the 180ml and 200ml portion packs, but the 110ml and 250ml packs are currently in the pipeline for transition.
The newly-developed bended paper straws are of food-grade quality and made without plastic or wax, which makes them fully recyclable. Several tests were made to ensure quality of paper straws so that they can withstand soaking in beverage for one hour.
The Philippines is one of the world’s heaviest polluters at sea with plastic straws contributing the bulk of the pollution.
