Nafoods Group JSC has recently selected Gia Lai as a strategic area to cultivate passion fruit and vegetables as part of its future growth plan.
On 29 March, Nafoods Group signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), effective from 2023 to 2026, with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Gia Lai Cooperative Alliance in the development of passion fruit and vegetables under the ‘Project on the Development of Vegetable, Flower, and Fruit Tree Production in the province to 2030, vision to 2040’.
Mr. Luu Trung Nghia, Director of the Gia Lai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the province has suitable climate and soil conditions to grow a variety of trees. Gia Lai’s soil is good not only for industrial plants but also fruits and vegetables, including passion fruit. Gia Lai currently has over 40,000 hectares of vegetables and over 29,000 hectares of fruit trees, of which approximately 4,200 hectares are for passion fruit making the province the country’s largest area for passion fruit cultivation. There is a plan to increase the cultivation area to 20,000 hectares by 2025. The average passion fruit efficiency is 40-45 tons/hectare with a selling price of about Dong 12,000/kg (US$0.51/kg). After deducting production cost, the farmer can earn a reasonable profit of Dong 350 million (US$15,000) per hectare.
Chairman of the Gia Lai Cooperative Alliance, Nguyen The Hung, hopes to turn Gia Lai into the capital for purple passion fruit and develop passion fruit into a staple crop. The MoU with Nafoods Group will help towards realising its goal as it seeks more connections with enterprises and farmers to develop the area.
The Gia Lai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will support Nafoods to effectively implement the development strategy for passion fruit and vegetables in the province.
