Global meat giant JBS will invest Real 150 million (US$29 million) to double its beef processing plant capacity in Brazil as it seeks to boost its exports to China.
According to a company spokesperson, the investment at its Campo Grande II facility will increase its animal head processing from 2,200 to 4,400 daily, transforming the beef plant into the largest beef processing plant in Latin America, and one of the top 3 for JBS worldwide.
Campo Grande II facility was approved by the Chinese government on 12 March to export beef to the country. JBS’s meat factory was one of the 38 Brazilian plants approved by China. Overall, JBS receives the most clearances – 12 – including 2 from Seara.
Gilberto Tomazoni, Global CEO of JBS announced, “These 38 authorisations for China represent a gigantic step for Brazilian agribusiness. They mean growth, job creation, and income. For industry, for the countryside, for people, for commerce, for cities.”
The Campo Grande II unit was built in 2007 and acquired by JBS in 2010. It produces 440 tonnes of meat and 136 tonnes of burgers daily. Apart from China, the unit can also export to the US, Algeria, Egypt, the UAE, EU, Argentina and Chile amongst others.
