Japanese food maker Imuraya Group Co. will partner with a local firm, Polar Ice Cream Sdn Bhd to produce ice cream in Malaysia, marking its first investment into the Southeast Asian region.
Imuraya however will leave production to its Malaysia partner. Sales are expected to begin in June 2020 with 3 types of ice cream including Imuraya’s signature product, ice cream bars flavored with ‘azuki’ red-bean paste.
Eventually, the group is using Malaysia as a springboard for its expansion into the neighbouring countries.
In February 2020, Imuraya has also disclosed plan to increase the capital of its local subsidiary, Imuraya Malaysia Sdn. Bhd to RM2.53 million (US$614,000) from RM30,000 (US$6,750) at the time of its establishment in December 2019. Its subsidiary is based in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
The partnership with Polar Ice Cream will facilitate Imuraya in acquiring Halal certification for its ice cream products, which is an essential recipe for success in Malaysian market and neighbouring countries.
