As demand for meat alternatives grew at unprecedented level in China, Yantai Shuangta Food, a major Chinese supplier of protein and starch derived from peas, is contracted to produce plant-based protein products for the UK-based consumer goods giant, Unilever.
Unilever will purchase 1,000 tonnes of plant-based products made according to its specifications by Shuangta Food based in north-eastern Shandong province.
Unilever’s meatless meat brand The Vegetarian Butcher is now supplying meat analogue Whopper hamburgers to 325 Burger King outlets in China.
China is expected to have a shortfall in meat supply of more than 38 million tonnes by the end of 2030, due to the global spread of African swine fever which has decimated its pig population. This presents a good opportunity for the development of meat substitutes.
