Zhongxuegao, a premium Chinese brand for ice cream has recently unveiled a new coffee pop-up product in nearly 600 cafes in China, whereby customers can add coffee to ice cream themselves at Rmb 45 (US$6.70).
Zhongxuegao started collaborating with independent coffee shops in Shanghai in June 2021. The products included a blend of Zhongxuegao’s almond and yogurt-flavored ice cream with cold-brew coffee, while others added Japanese probiotic milk beverage Yakult or jasmine green tea.
Adding ice cream to coffee has become increasingly popular in China.
China’s ice cream market was valued at Rmb 147 billion (US$21.8 billion) in 2020 and is likely to reach Rmb 160 billion (US$23 billion) in 2021, making it the world’s largest market, according to data from Qianzhan Industry Research Institute. Ice cream makers have been rapidly innovating with flavors and ingredients, to capture new consumers.
