Malaysia confirms plan to impose tax on sugary drinks

In the latest Budget 2019 announcement, Malaysia will impose a RM0.40 (US$0.096) tax for every 5g of sugar or sugar-based sweetener per millilitre of soda drinks.
As for juices or vegetable-based drinks, a RM0.40 (US$0.096) tax will be imposed for every 12g of sugar per millilitre.
The idea to impose tax on sugary items was earlier floated by members from the new Pakatan Harapan government in their efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle among Malaysians.
