When we think of wafers as snacks, we often associate them with fruit flavours or the standard vanilla or chocolate flavours. In Indonesia, one company has tried something different by introducing a wafer with savoury flavors, seaweed and meat floss.
PT Javaindo Maju Sejahtera has launched the 2 new variants under the brand of Numbro in 50g plastic packaging to the Indonesian market late last year, and it is now negotiating with trade buyers from Vietnam, China and Taiwan to export these products. One advantage of this product is that it is already certified Halal by MUI, Indonesian Halal certification body.
According to the company's President Director, Suseno Hadi Purnomo, the recommended retail selling price for the wafer would be Rp 2,000 (US$0.15) per 50g packaging. The products are also sold in a bigger box containing a dozen or less packets. Suseno said that the company has just sold the products to the general trade in Java island and South Sumatra.
Target consumers are children above 6 years old as well as young adults who are adventurous in their eating habits, said Suseno. The 2 savoury variants are very crispy and tasty to the taste-buds and will definitely attract interests of the younger age groups.
At the same time, another Indonesian manufacturer, PT Choice Plus Makmur has also launched for test marketing wafers in exotic local fruit flavors namely mangosteen, pineapple and durian flavors. These wafers are marketed under the Fine Choice brand in retort pouch packaging.
